Double celebration for Gold Cup centenary year as July’s event is postponed

The Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) is postponing the annual Gold Cup open day, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The event was scheduled to take place this July on the farm of Bryce and Robert Sloan, Auchinleck, Ayrshire, winners of the 2019 NMR/RABDF Gold Cup.

The Gold Cup open day, which has historically attracted more than 1,000 visitors, has been moved to spring 2021 when it is hoped the COVID-19 pandemic will be under control.

RABDF Webinar Will Highlight How to Make Farm Health and Safety Practical

Dairy farmers are being encouraged to tune into a practical 30-min Health and Safety Webinar after data reveals the chances of being involved in an accident on a farm is far higher than construction.

Health and safety expert Cari Beard, from the Farm Consultancy Group will highlight during a webinar next week (28 May), the health and safety laws and how to practically implement them.

Ms Beard said: “There are seven times more people working in the construction industry, yet you are seven times more likely to die on a farm from an accident.

“As dairy farmers enter a busy period with extra machinery operating during silage season and with added pressures due to possible staff shortages and worries around Coronavirus, it is important farmers take the time out to assess health and safety on their farm,” she said.

All businesses should by law have a health and safety policy. Using that policy and making it practical is important, Ms Beard added.

“If you have a contractor coming onto your farm you have to give them a health and safety induction. That does not mean standing them there and telling them what to do. You can share health and safety information when you send them the field maps that need silaging across, for example.   It’s really important to keep it practical,” she said.

The webinar is taking place on Thursday 28th May at 11 am. To register and find out more go to rabdf.co.uk/forthcoming-events/farm-safety-webinar
