‘NU Farms’ is a teaching, research and engagement platform based across our two farms. Run commercially, they comprise more than 800 hectares of farmland including a 350 cow dairy herd maximising milk from grass and using precision techniques to optimise health, production and forage utilisation. We lead the Centre for Digital Innovation Applied to Livestock, part of the Government’s Agritech Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock. This purpose-built facility brings the latest remote sensing and automated technologies to precision livestock farming, and equipment for the continuous monitoring of the performance, health and welfare of livestock.
We have a number of high profile industry and research collaborations, including the: Institute for Agri-Food Research Innovations (IAFRI) with Fera Science Ltd, to deliver sustainable solutions across the agri-food supply chain, guided by an expert industrial advisory group. ‘NU Food’ is a Nationally and Internationally respected research centre addressing how consumers, food producers, retailers and processors make decisions about food. Our Centre for the Rural Economy specialises in social science and applied policy research to work towards the achievement of sustainable development in rural areas. We are also the northern host for DEFRA’s Farm Business Survey.
All this cutting edge research and industry liaison feeds into our TEF Gold Award for teaching, and you are taught by researchers leading globally in their field.
