The dairy sector is at the forefront of technological and ethical development, the next generation of dairy managers will oversee significant change and ensure the sector maintains its essential role in the production of high quality, sustainable food. Newcastle University aims to develop people, technology and polices that will feed the world.

The magnificent city centre campus is augmented by two farms with cutting edge facilities and progressive and experimental management methods. Newcastle undergraduates are encouraged to consider a placement year: internationally at a partner university, or in graduate level employment.  You can get a flavour of the modules you will study in the various degrees links below, you can specialise in Dairy topics or keep a broader perspective.

Whilst studying as an Undergraduate or Postgraduate at Newcastle, you will have access to our World Class resources:

‘NU Farms’ is a teaching, research and engagement platform based across our two farms. Run commercially, they comprise more than 800 hectares of farmland including a 350 cow dairy herd maximising milk from grass and using precision techniques to optimise health, production and forage utilisation. We lead the Centre for Digital Innovation Applied to Livestock, part of the Government’s Agritech Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock.  This purpose-built facility brings the latest remote sensing and automated technologies to precision livestock farming, and equipment for the continuous monitoring of the performance, health and welfare of livestock.

We have a number of high profile industry and research collaborations, including the: Institute for Agri-Food Research Innovations (IAFRI) with Fera Science Ltd, to deliver sustainable solutions across the agri-food supply chain, guided by an expert industrial advisory group.  ‘NU Food’ is a Nationally and Internationally respected research centre addressing how consumers, food producers, retailers and processors make decisions about food.  Our Centre for the Rural Economy specialises in social science and applied policy research to work towards the achievement of sustainable development in rural areas. We are also the northern host for DEFRA’s Farm Business Survey.

All this cutting edge research and industry liaison feeds into our TEF Gold Award for teaching, and you are taught by researchers leading globally in their field.

You will be a part of something big, with friendly staff who know you.  You will study alongside students of agriculture, animal science, biology, nutrition, environmental science, business, marketing, applied plant science, as well as the wider University population including medics, politicians, lawyers and artists  – everyone has their part to play in the dairy supply chain.

Our graduates with a specialism in dairy go on to various careers, working: in supply chain management, developing successful home businesses adding value to their dairy enterprise, for Government Agencies, in the allied industries such as consultants in the feed sector, genetics, agronomy, land management or progressing to veterinary or scientific research.
