The University of Surrey’s impressive facilities are located close to Guildford, in the South-East of England. They include a Veterinary Clinical Skills Centre and a Veterinary Pathology Centre, which are designed to give students hands-on, practical, clinical and research training from the start of their five year degree course.
Through working in partnership with clinical practices and other organisations involved in animal health, we offer a genuine ‘hands-on’ experience which is proving extremely popular with students. Students also benefit from access to the skills and knowledge of our wide network of vet practices, research institutes and government agencies.
In January 2020, we were delighted to announce that our innovative Veterinary Medicine and Science (BVMSci) degree received official accreditation from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Accreditation enables veterinary students at Surrey to register with RCVS and practise in the United Kingdom. https://www.surrey.ac.uk/undergraduate/veterinary-medicine-and-science
Dairy Practice
Dairy practice forms a significant part of our farm animal teaching. Teaching and research staff are focused on preparing students to meet the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) “Day One Competencies” and each student will be expected to graduate with a solid knowledge and understanding of the dairy industry.
Surrey veterinary students learn about: herd health management; responsible use of medicines; animal welfare; clinical nutrition and transition management; young stock health and management; monitoring and managing infectious diseases and herd health data analysis, among other relevant subjects to the dairy industry. Moreover, students are exposed to ‘hands on’ practical experience from the very start of the course; farm animal teaching is delivered in partnership with working farms and farm animal veterinary practices; covering all areas of dairy management and medicine.
We are confident that when students finish their five-year degree course at the University of Surrey, they leave fully equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to make a valuable contribution to the country’s dairy industry; helping farmers apply best practice with regard to the promotion of animal welfare and ensuring the future sustainability and profitability of a dairy farm.
