The University of Reading and its School of Agriculture, Policy and Development has a longstanding history and reputation for teaching and research in the agriculture sector, and each year it supports and teaches around 700 students studying at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The University owns some 800 hectares of agricultural land surrounding Reading, dedicated to providing an environment for research and teaching as well as representing a significant commercial farming operation.
The 550+ Holstein herd has an average yield of 10,000 litres per cow per annum, milked in a 50-point rotary parlour. The renowned Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR) provides a platform for world leading dairy research and innovation. A range of specialist facilities, including capacity for individual feeding of up to 200 cows, allow for both large scale research and strategic studies with smaller groups of animals. The University of Reading’s BSc Agriculture, BSc Agricultural Business Management and BSc Animal Science degrees all feature opportunities to deepen knowledge and understanding of the dairy industry – from the science underpinning dairy production, to the management of dairy enterprises. All degrees are available with an optional placement year, and BSc Agriculture and BSc Animal Science also offer a Foundation Year option.
