Note from Matt - May 2021

Life is finally returning to some sort of normality and as such, we are delighted to have a date for our first face to face event in over a year. The Gold Cup event on the Sloan family farm in Auchinleck, Ayrshire, will finally take place on Thursday 5th August.

It will be one of the first opportunities the dairy industry has had to meet since the start of the pandemic. We expect, as is always the case with our Gold Cup events, there will be a large attendance with folk keen to interact after such a long spell with no events and social interaction. With many summer shows being axed again this year, it could be one of the few opportunities people have to meet and interact.

It will be great for visitors to see how this family farm has adopted technology, including installing three milking robots on their greenfield site and how they have sought new opportunities to ensure their success as a profitable dairy business.

Robert Sloan has a great take on how to manage staff and is keen to ensure a work/life balance for all his workforce, including himself. Keep posted on our website for more information. If you are from the trade and would like to book a stand, please email victoriaingram@rabdf.co.uk

Labour remains a keen theme for us and in the coming months, we plan on launching a resource area on our website where you can go and download contract templates, get help with difficult employee situations, and get hints and tips on recruiting the right staff for your farm. If there is anything you feel would be useful when it comes to labour and recruitment, then please do share your ideas by emailing office@rabdf.co.uk.

Something that may be of interest is an Employment Law Webinar on Recruiting and Retaining Migrant Workers Post-Brexit and Beyond run by Farmers Weekly on Thursday 27th May at 6.30pm. Council member, Mike King, is one of the speakers talking about his experience of recruiting foreign workers. Other speakers include Sacha Wooldridge, Senior Associate, Birketts Law; Tom Bradshaw, vice-president of the NFU and David Camp, the chief executive of the Association of Labour Providers. It looks like it is going to be an informative webinar. You can sign up for free at fwi.co.uk/employment-wbr .

We always like to hear from our members, so if you would like to get in touch or keep posted with what is happening at RABDF you can do so in many ways.
